Quests for Your First Visit to an International Art Fair

Is it homework that won’t even be checked at the end or a pseudo-treasure hunt where the prize is a balanced nervous system? Who knows? Either way, here are 7 Must Do Things for your next foray through an art fair near you.

The Art Fair Seven Are:

  1. Find a print work or sculpture that you like.

  2. Find an internationally based gallery you liked the work of and get their card. [Then go visit it.]

  3. Visit the emerging galleries space at the far side of the show.

  4. Check out NADA. Those are the emerging art dealers who will eventually make it to the Basel floor.

  5. Go to an artist talk. They're fun.

  6. If you see an artist you like selling their catalog, buy it and have them sign it for you.

  7. Meet a stranger and talk with them about their experiences.

Did you know Iceland has a program that pays monthly salaries to artists? What's one way to make sure Iceland is represented at art fairs. What do they do where you're from to support contemporary art and living artists?

Here's my own completed quest for treasure at my first Basel. As a first timer in some aspects, and a solo flyer much of the time, creating structure helps counteract the overwhelming scale of amazing things to see, experience and learn about in a shortened period of time.
